It is one step for the plant the future initiative of KWSHG.
We have also planted trees in the august 2011 work camp and the 2012 work camps which is going on now.
2. Brick Making
The project is an income generating activity to the organization, through donation from Alberto and Rocio.
Currently we are making 10,000 bricks to generate an Income of approximately Ksh 35,000 to establish a school starting January 2010.
In 2012 August work camp , we managed to make
3. Poultry Farming
It was started in Dec 2009 through fundraising and fines collected from the members.A total of Ksh of 2,600 were raised.
As per now the organization has a total of 31 chicken
4. Beans and maize project
This is a seasonal project done twice a year and the farming is done by the members themselves.
Without use of fertilizer, we normally harvest 5 and 2 bags of maize and beans respectively.
The output we get, some portion is sold to generate income and the remaining used as food to the old and needy individuals in the community.
5. FGM Awareness/guiding and Counseling
During meetings, some women ask for guiding and counseling to their kids especially daughters who intend to undergo Female genital mutilations a result of external pressure. The year 2009, KWSHG youths did some counseling for grade 7 and 8 in Kiburanga primary school, they spoke about the effects of the act concerning their health and how to respect decisions made by other people.
It was a response to Judy Boke’s need as she was undergoing frustrations and discrimination at school based on her stand against FGM.
In December and January 2010, a student from DEPAUW UNIVERSITY in USA will visit Kiburanga to conduct an independent study, on what the cultural importance of FGM. She a Kenyan from Kuria who grew up in Nairobi. Gati was afraid of being forced into FGM and discrimination in upcountry. So she is back for answers!
NB Out of ten short-term goals, we have managed to accomplish five of them
LONG TERM GOALS WE HAVE DONE
1. Temporal Resource centre
The organization has a land bought by Croatian volunteers through fundraising and donations, at a cost of Ksh 75,000.
We have not yet established the centre to respond to the needs of the community.
Through collective efforts from the 26 volunteers.11 from Spain and 15 from different parts of Kenya in the August 2010 work camp, we managed to establish temporal resource centre to shelter women and Kids from strong sunshine and rain during meetings.
2. Water Project
Through donations from SCI- Madrid and some portion from the fees paid by the volunteers during August 2010 work camp, a water tank worth Ksh 95,000 with a capacity of 10,000 litres was installed to provide clean and safe water to the community to tap rain water.
In addition, during the same work camp we protected the stream by use of walls made from cement to tap clean and safe water. The stream provides a permanent source of water compared to rain water which is seasonal
3. Employment Opportunity
KWSHG has created jobs based on wages for the members of the community in various ways, for instance it employed a plumber during August 2010 work camp in a period of three weeks contract and currently two experts are employed to make bricks for the organization.
The main objective of this department is to offer job opportunities for people to support their dreams and goals in future.
We look forward to working with any organization or an individual with strategic plans on how to create jobs.
4. Sponsorships For Needy Children
KWSHG has 63 orphans most of which, the parents died of HIV/AIDS. Most women are single parents since their husbands died as a result of inter marriage between women (Nyumba Mboke).
Some of the young children assume responsibilities of their parents by taking care of the siblings and maintain them in school. They drop from schools to pave way for their young brothers and sisters.
Disabled children don’t have support and centre to respond to their special needs.
Most of the current problems of the world, terrorism, poverty, overcrowded jails, gangs, prostitutions, unemployment, HIV/Aids etc is as a result of our children innocence taken away from them.
This is a very sensitive area and speed of the essence.
As a result of August 2010 work camp, a volunteer by the name Rosa Pellcer got interested in sponsoring a child by the name Sophia starting January 2011.Let us join our hands together in supporting such initiatives.
5. Links
Through Silvia, KWSHG has a direct link with SCI-Madrid to send International Volunteers to the grass root organization.
One objective of work camps is to promote intercultural exchange that is between different communities besides developments.
According to evaluations made by the volunteers including the Auditors from SCI, the camp was a success and we are only required to prove it once more.
OTHERS
KWSHG had some management challenges as a result of rapid growth of the organization, but this was solved in time and collectively by both local in International volunteers.
Alberto the treasurer of SCI-Madrid together with Rocio gave out some training on management, financial and effective decision making to Kiburanga staff. By use of both counter books and excel computer program.
FUTURE PLANS
1. Start a school
As a result of the increase in the number of Kids in Kiburanga Play ground interested in learning and playing games, we intend to start a school by January 2011.
KWSHG has a plan of fundraising in December 2010 to support the project.
2. Buy Bulls
We intend to buy two bulls for farming as this will save time and cut the costs and increase the income of the organization.
An ox-drawn plough and a set of oxen are targeted to increase income by cultivating their own farm in a large scale than before and hiring the animals and the plough to other people at a fee which becomes a direct income to the group.
3. Stock The Library
Kuria district is the second poorest when it comes to education in Kenya and by stocking a Library we will create the spirit of learning to the members of the community. This will make us compete to the rest of the world for better jobs etc.
All members shall be asked to send a book with any kind of information be it Heath materials, education, animals, rocks, politics, management, leadership etc.
4. Provide 21 homes with water tanks
KWSHG has a plan to install small water tanks with a capacity of 2,500 litres in 21 homes at a cost of approximately Ksh 7,000 each.
This will be done during the August 2011 work camp.
The tanks shall be used to tap clean and safe rain water.
