These are the major needs and challenges of a normal child facing during development period as most parents cannot afford to maintain them in school.
CHALLENGES CHILDREN FACE
· School dropout; we find that most kids cut their education in grade Five due to lack of school fees. And some don’t complete high school.
· Early marriage; majority of girls in Kuria get into marriage when their parents cannot afford school fees, and the average age is 14 years.
· Child labor; Kids are forced to turn into helping their parents in farming, while others collect firewood and sell them in the nearby market to raise school fees and this affects their study pattern.
KURIA KIDS
Most of the children in Kuria don’t go to school because their parents cannot afford to pay for their studies and some are orphans and vulnerable and they live with their old grandparents.
THEIR FAMILIES
Majority of families in Kuria depend on farming maize, beans and tobacco for their income which is not sufficient to supply their basic needs. There is need of education, trainings and innovation to provide alternative sources of livelihood. Most of families live in less than dollar a day.
ABOUT KURIA
Kuria is a district considered second poorest when it comes to education, the district is made up of three divisions namely, and Kehacha, Masaba and Mambera.Kuria exhibits high prevalence of poverty estimated at 61% .The poorest of the division is Mabera where Kiburanga is located. This is due to high level of unemployment, illiteracy, unfavorable climate and lack of materials and knowledge on alternative sources of income.
